Service and Sewing Pajama Party

The final camp of the summer was a blast!  We invited parents/grandparents to come with their 4-Her to a Sewing and Service Pajama party at the Sevier County Fairgrounds.  The LDS Humanitarian Center gave us all we needed to tie baby quilts and we were able to complete two quilts.  The youth also completed 3 sewing projects - pj pants, a pillowcase, and a pillow pet.  We had the music going and snacks and it was just so much fun!  Thanks to Lara for planning the camp and to the adults that came to help out - it was a great success.

Science Adventure

This summer our Science Adventures Camp was packed with great experiments and great kids.  Lara did a fantastic job planning and teaching the camp and we had 15 youth eager to learn and do each experiment.

A few of the experiments included: egg in a bottle, quicksand goo, color changing milk, homemade ice cream, invisible ink, and several others.  We adapted a few of the Aggie Adventure camp guides to fit our schedule and the kids we had signed up.  If you'd like to see more of the Aggie Adventure camp guides you can download them here.

On the last day the youth made their own videos to share things they learned at camp.  (Note: if you are get motion sick easy, these may be a little hard to watch - you've been warned!) They did a great job planning out the story they wanted to tell then filming in action.  Thanks to Lara for her editing and thanks to all the kids for coming to camp and having such a great time!

Cloverbud Camp #2: Fabric Exploration

Cloverbud Camp #2: Fabric Exploration

This camp was all about fabric.  We learned things like: different fabric weaves, how some fabrics are stretchy and some aren't, what types of fabrics are good for different types of clothing or projects, etc.  Youth got to practice weaving on looms, we stained fabric with various things (mustard, dandelions, ketchup, dirt, koolaid) then tried to wash out the stain, and we also did a Cloverbud friendly tye-dye project with permanent markers and rubbing alcohol (so easy! and clean!).  It was a really fun day!
The mustard was really hard to get out - he scrubbed and scrubbed!

We used handkerchiefs - the kids colors with marker then you spray rubbing alcohol in the center of the picture and the colors spread out almost like water colors.  To finish we put ours in the sun to dry but you can also put them in the dryer to help the pictures not wash out.  Such a fun, easy project!

Dumpster Diva's

The Dumpster Diva 4-H project started back in 2011.  Barbie is mastermind behind help kids make super cute things from items that could otherwise be recycled.  This is the third summer we've had a Dumpster Diva camp and the projects did not disappoint once again. Some of the projects included: t-shirt rugs, egg carton fairy lights, mason jar soap dispensers, and more!  Keep an eye out for more Dumpster Diva classes - you'll be sure to have a fun time and come away with some great projects!

4-H Campers Camp

Camper's Camp was a blast!  This was the first of 4 camps led by the staff of the Sevier County 4-H program.  We took a little bit different approach this summer and focused our time on concentrated camps that created learning experiences rather than hit or miss one day activities scattered here and there all summer.  The youth that participated were not disappointed - we had a great time and learn some important skills for the future.  Many thanks to our great volunteers that helped us this summer!

Day 1: Was all about making our own Camping Bucket seats...

And learning about fire safety...

Day 2: Cooking day!  Brownies in an orange, hamburgers on a buddy burner, and cheese on a stick!

Day 3: Hiking time! The kids painted their own walking sticks and made snacks to take along.  Along the trail they stopped for some lessons on safety and what to look for and pay attention to when you're out hiking.  Again, many thanks to Nan Singleton for planning the camp and Phil Singleton and Liz Steele for their help in making it a great week!

Cloverbud Day Camp #1: Clowning Around

To begin our series of three Cloverbud Camps this summer we kicked it off with a day to Clown Around.

To go along with our theme of creating learning experiences, we started out the day learning about what clowns do.  Well, they have clown clothes and learn clown tricks like balancing and walking a tight rope.  We played a few clown-related games, made clown faces in our snack food, and the kids had a great time making their very own clown costumes.  Thanks to Lara, our 4-H intern, for planning Cloverbud camps this summer.

i4-H - Shipwrecked

We had six Sevier County youth attend this year's i4-H camp held in Price, Utah.  Typically the Sevier County 4-H program will offer up to ten $50 scholarship for youth to attend statewide camps. Scholarships are available on a first come, first served basis.

This year's i4-H camp was a little different.  With a portion of the camp being sponsored by Maker Media, the youth were able to build and experiment with several different types of projects that were unfamiliar. One of the projects they did was using a product called Lumi Inkodye where you combine photos, dye, and sunlight to make designs on fabric. Visit their website here and scroll down to see a video of how it works.

Maker Media is a organization that is focused on connecting people who love to build (or MAKE) things.  Maker Media also publishes a magazine called MAKE: where enthusiast in the Maker Movement can get challenges and ideas on how to build a variety of things.  What greater partner for 4-H - a historically strong HANDS ON LEARNING organization?  4-Hers learn great skills by getting in there with their hands and they definitely can MAKE things happen.  For more information on Maker Media click here.  And if you'd like to see some of the projects come here to Sevier County leave a comment and let us know!

Note: The 2014 i4-H camp will be held at USU Eastern in Price, UT June 16-18th. Registrations will be due no later than May 15th, 2014.  Be looking for info to come out in March or April next year!
