LEGO Season Update

Over 200 teams across Utah have registered to compete in this season’s FIRST LEGO League. That includes 2 brave teams from Sevier County who will be competing in January 2016. One of those teams will be representing us this year!

To help support them, Sevier County 4-H will be hosting a tournament at the Fairgrounds on January 9, 2016. This cannot happen without amazing volunteers like YOU.

A successful qualifying tournament requires wonderful people who are willing to support the hard work of the youth involved. These teams of youth practice all season (May to January) to compete on tournament day.

So, how can you help?
We are currently looking for teen and adult volunteers who can fill important tournament roles.

Judge Assistant
Responsible for keeping judging sessions on schedule, keeping waiting teams quiet, assuring teams are sent to correct judging location, and helping to prepare and break-down judging rooms.

Photographer
Help capture the moment!  Work with tournament leadership to develop a shot sheet.

Referee
Observes team robot game matches, identifies rule violations, assesses field for scoring of matches, and participates in deliberations regarding contested calls and official scores.  Position works under the direction of the Head Referee.  Requires advance training and intimate knowledge of current Robot Challenge Game rules.

Registration
Assists with FLL Team Registration.  Position provides direction, assistance, and information to FLL coaches and other adults accompanying teams and distributes materials.

Other
These are just a few examples of ways you can help. Find out other ways to help HERE. Ready to volunteer? Register HERE to help make this an amazing experience for the participating teams.

Sign Ups for LEGO Robotics

image
Now that we have introduced you to the LEGO Mindstorm kits through the LEGO my Robot event, it is time to start forming Robotics Teams.

Who can be on a Robotics Team?
Youth ages 9-14 are invited to join Robotics Teams. To participate through Sevier County 4-H, youth must be enrolled in 4-H prior to participation.

How do I enroll in 4-H?
Youth may enroll in 4-H by visiting this site or by visiting the 4-H office. Remember, youth must be enrolled in 4-H prior to participating in a LEGO Robotics team through Sevier County 4-H.

How do I sign up to be on a LEGO Robotics team?
Visit this site to sign up. If you already signed up in paper form, you do not have to sign up through this online form.

When will LEGO Robotics team meetings begin?
Once we have Coaches, we will begin to sort teams according to Coach availability and location. If you have signed up, you will receive notice about the When and the Where as soon as Coaches are available.

I might be interested in becoming a LEGO Robotics Coach.
Awesome! Please take a moment to fill out this short form, and we can discuss what it takes to become a Robotics Coach. If you have already signed up in paper form, you do not have to sign up through this online form. Also, check out the video below for inspiration.

I have other questions or concerns.
If you have any other questions about 4-H Robotics Teams, contact Aris at aris.biederman@usu.edu

We need YOU to coach a team

image image

Now that we have robotics kits, it is time to start preparing for the FIRST LEGO League tournament. The first step is to find Head Coaches. That means you!

Who can coach a LEGO robotics team?

Head coaches are 18 or older. Assistant coaches are 15 or older.

What does a Head Coach do?

You don’t have to know anything about robotics to coach a FIRST LEGO League team. There are plenty of available resources (including detailed videos) that teach youth how to build and program the robots. Here is the coach’s role:

  • Plans and schedules team meetings
  • Chooses team members (ages 9-14)
  • Guides team members toward success with leading questions and encouragement (the rules require youth to build and program robots by themselves!)

The great thing about coaching through Sevier County 4-H is that we will help every step of the way!

What happens at a FIRST LEGO League competition?

The competition is divided into three main parts:

  • The Robot Game: youth build and program LEGO Mindstorm robots to complete as many challenges as possible before time runs out.
  • The Project: youth design an innovative solution to solve a real-world problem and present before a panel of judges
  • Core Values: youth learn to respect their competitors, their teammates, and their coaches, while abiding by the competition’s set Core Values.

This sounds cool! How do I learn more?

Email Aris at aris.biederman@usu.edu or call the Sevier County 4-H office at

(435) 893-0470.
